Dogs Everywhere

file under Events | October 28th, 2008

Sunday was dog-gone fun.  There were dogs everywhere.  And, I gotta say, some pretty funny costumes.  I’m not sure the highlight of the day.  The puppies from the pound.  The K-9 demo.  That demo drew the crowd.  They had about 5 dogs here.  I think we only saw two perform, but we saw it all.  They found the drugs (heroin).  They attacked the bad guys.  They attacked the bad guy in a muzzle (dog, not bad guy).  If you were lucky enough to see the show, you got your money’s worth.  Rowdy, Buck, Sammy, and Rambo are beat.  They’ve just been laying around the last couple of dayz.  Come on gang, the Dog Dayz of Summer are over; get back to work!  Thanks to all who showed, and to all who dressed for the occasion.

Santa Cruz HOG Rules!

file under HOG | October 28th, 2008

I’ve written about our local HOG chapter before.  Telling anyone who will listen (or read) how great this group is.  Kinda like the proud parent thing.  Well.  They’ve done it again.  What a group.  Once again they’ve won the points trophy for the greater Bay Area chapters.  No small feat for a chapter our size.  Means they’ve gotta have great participation in all these events.  They’ve gotta win lots of competitions.  Ah.  Heck.  It means they gotta show up all the rest.  They are the best.  The story I love is the annual Halloween Contest.  That’s the final event for the trophy.  25/26/27 folks from the chapter made costumes and showed up in Fremont this past Saturday to re-in-act the Wizard of Oz - in under 3 minutes.  The Wizard on speed, I guess.  I saw some of their costumes.  Outrageous.  More than 70 members of the chapter went up there to participate with them.  More folks from the Santa Cruz chapter showed up than any other chapter.  Hats off to the great folks from Santa Cruz HOG.  They keep ridin’ and havin’ fun.  Way to go gang!

Weighing In

Suppose to steer clear of the political thing.  I did so well for several weeks.  Then.  Well there was just one little slip a few weeks back.  That didn’t cost the Typo too many readers.  So.  Here goes.  This article in the New Yorker, by funny-man David Sedaris, is just too good to pass up.  He’s talking about the undecided folks out there.  I’m not sure how you could take offense at the article (wait, unless you’re still undecided).  His stories and one analogy (don’t wanna spoil it for you) are laugh-out-loud funny.  So, careful where you read this.  Don’t forget - Tuesday - mark your calendar.  It’s time to vote and get this all behind us.

Do You Count Today?

file under Events, Interesting Stuff | October 22nd, 2008

If you do.  It’s four days until the dog-gon’dst great party.  SCPD will highlight the program this Sunday at Santa Cruz Harley.  No they’re not bringing the drug-sniffin’ dog.  He’s got the day off.  Gotta rest the nose.  You know - finely tuned instrument.  Etc.  They’re bringin’ the K-9 unit and promised a nice demonstration of the capabilities of the animal.  While it will be a really big shooooow (think Ed Sullivan), the highlight of the day will undoubtedly be the dog-only costume contest.  I did get another query about eligibility.  Yes, if your dog is part wolf (and it will allow you to dress it in anything that resembles a costume), you may bring it and enter it in the costume contest.  Settled.

We’ve seen some dogs already trying out walking-the-runway in their costumes.  I guess they’re newbies.  You know, even if your dog isn’t a super-dog-model, we want to see it parading on Sunday 1-3pm.  Some doggie-specific vendors will be on hand.  We’ll have some terrific prizes for the contest.  All and all, it’s shaping up to be a day of great fun for everyone but the local cats.

Special thanks go out to Rowdy, Sammy, Rambo and Buck.  Between naps they really pulled out all the stops to bring us a great day.

Bring along a friend who needs a dog.  The ASPCA has graciously agreed to make this a pet-adoption event as well.  They’ll have a bunch of great animals that need a new home and a new life.

Sunday 1-3pm.

Perfect Timing

$110,000 motorcycle.  Today.  These guys historically have done some of the coolest, techy stuff.  But, they always seem to miss the market.  Guessing they just don’t care.  “The world be damned.  We’re gonna build what we want, when we want.”  Love it.  Long live Confederate.  If you get one, let me know.  I’d love to come over and see it!

This article may or may not last.  The version I read, seems to be a pre-pub markup.  With cross throughs and all.  So.  Hopefully it’s still there when you link.

redtrike_2215.jpgThat’s what I had when I saw the new Tri-Glide.  Our first one arrived today.  Sold to a luck customer who’s been patiently waiting.  Two weeks delayed.  Guess there is a lot of shipping back and forth between Harley plants.  It’s all worth it though.  This beast is cool.  You gotta see it.  With a bit of luck it’ll be here today and most of tomorrow.  Come on down and check it out.  Here’s another pic.

Sucker for a Cool Darkroom

calloftrainspg25_800.jpgYep!  And, not ashamed to admit it.  Why?  Right.  So, not even worth talking about.

But, this is if you are into trains.  Jim Shaughnessy, a wonderfully, talented photographer, has just published his work on the Golden Age of Trains in Black and White.  I mean, what other color would they be?  Here is an article with a quick look at 11 images (and then one of his darkroom).  It’s hard not to be fascinated by trains.  Why is that?  Check this out.

Want more?  I think this is the book.  Enjoy.

Video Day

Funnily (new word) enough.  Two separate (as opposed to connected) Typos (aka loyal readers) sent me the same video.  Whow!  It must be good, right?  Oh.  In the same week, too.  Well heck, you be the judge.  I enjoyed it enough to… include it here.  If you’ve driven in Italy, it will all make sense.  Crazy.  Wild.  Fun.  Watch it.

Ok.  How about another video.  A while back, another loyal Typonian (similar to a Typos) sent me a link to a young, very talented, guitarist.  Really enjoyable to watch and listen to him play.  So.  Here is another young talent.  I’m throwin’ this one in for the ladies.  So, guys whatever you do - don’t watch this video.  PS.  As far as her covers go, I think she does a bang up job with Coldplay’s Scientist.

So.  Last one.  I just love stuff like this.  But, really who has this kinda time?  And, where was subway security?

Order Yours Today

Ok.  This one of those articles you just pass over.  Then the headline and accompanying picture just draws you back in.  You’re thinkin’ with everything goin’ on in the world and here at home, can someone really be writing about this?  Or, better yet, can anyone really be working on this?  I haven’t been to Ithaca (NY - I think), but I’m guessing they got some strange folks up there.  Too much snow and cold, I guess.  Read for yourself.

Parents Weekend

file under Events, Special Offers | October 16th, 2008

Well it’s parents weekend season.  So.  I’m off this afternoon to a parents weekend for my son.  It’s when they let the animals out.  It’s funny how they start “parents weekend” on Thursday.  Then it’s all over on Saturday.  Odd.  I always think of Saturday and Sunday as the weekend.  Occasionally, you can throw in a Friday and call it a three-dayer.  We’re new to this kids away at school thing, so lots to learn.  Here’s the best.  He’s gotta be back at school Tuesday at 1pm for football films.  Parents at this school must not work….

Phil has been complaining about the food.  Says it’s not up to the standards he was used to.  Hah!  Welcome to the real world.  But, apparently they really “cook good” while the parents are on campus.  I can’t wait to rave to him about the food and exclaim, “I don’t know what you were complaining about.”  Also working on my best routines to embarrass him in front of his friends.  It should be a fun weekend.  Hope yours is as well.

Here’s what’s happening at Santa Cruz Harley.  Hope you’ll swing by.  Spend some of your diminishing green - that’d be a great bonus.  We’d love it.

Friday/Saturday/Sunday the gang will be celebrating the 19th anniversary of the Loma P earthquake.  As a side note, our building suffered minimal damage during the shake.  Good bones and good karma.  Ok.  So, we’re doing a variation on the trick or treat/pop a balloon thing.  This weekend - all weekend - pick a purchase; shake this little wooden house; pull out a discount; and, save big.  Sunday.  Sunday.  Sunday.  Becci V is going all out.  She’s got the famous Santa Cruz Pineapple Upside Down Cake Bakers fired up.  They’re goin’ all out.  So, we’ll be servin’ the best darn pineapple upside down cake you’ve had this month.

Who celebrates an earthquake? I know, I know.  Stupid idea, but we’re gonna have some fun with it.  So.  Come down and play along!
